Metal Stairs
Baltimore Railings & Stairs can handle the complete job, not just the decorative railings / balustrades, but the stairs, the railings, all components. We will build custom stairs to fit your needs.

Whereas with railings there is a choice in materials, for the structural components of stairs the choice is steel, steel or steel. However, there are many decorative components to stairs as well where the many choices described on the Railings page apply. And even regarding steel, there is a surprising range of choices that can create many different effects and looks.

The structure of the staircase is welded which makes it stronger than mechanical fittings, or in other words, bolted together. Because of this it will be more durable and last longer.

Treads - You have more choice than you may realize. Pictured here, you can see the most common of wood or steel. But there are also stairs known as pan stairs. This is where each tread is in the shape of a pan into which cement is poured. Typically these are used in commercial situations. But, these can be upgraded and used in commercial or residential settings by putting in tile or stone.

Open Riser vs. Closed Riser - The riser is the vertical part of the stairs between each tread (the part you walk on). Open riser is like the picture to the left where there is essentially no riser, you can see right through. Closed riser would be like the traditional wood stairs in a house where there is a piece of wood vertically between the treads. You can see the same thing below in the picture of the pan stairs that have metal risers between the pan treads.

Straight vs. Spiral - Spiral staircases can look very elegant and are great when space is at a premium. You can have stairs that are straight, or have a landing in the middle. Or in a tighter space, there might be a landing and the stairs then turn 90 degrees or double back on themselves. There are many configurations that can help solve a design or space problem.

Railings / Balustrades / Banisters - All words for the same thing. There is a choice of material that can be used in their creation.
  • Wrought or Forged Iron
  • Steel
  • Aluminum
  • Bronze/brass (usually accents)
  • Wood
  • Glass
They can be powder coated, painted different colors, given clear coatings for a natural look, or different finishes such as brushed, polished, or a rough rustic look.

The Balusters or Spindles can come in an amazing variety of shapes: Straight or twisted, basket or scroll or ribbon designs, round or square, cast or forged, or custom. Instead of vertical balusters you can get other looks with wire cables run horizontally, wire mesh, wood, or glass.

Whether you are a home owner or a builder of residential or commercial properties we would love to work with you and build a set of Baltimore stairs that will be memorable and raise the value of your home or property.
